science behind it

Teacher: Ms. Martinelli

Course:  Introduction to Physical Science

Assignment: Trading Cards for Physics

After completing this project, you should understand how science is related to a job of your choice.

TOPIC –A profession or hobby that you are interested in or want to pursue. Talk to people too!  They may give you fresh ideas!

BRAINSTORMING-Come up with ideas about how science is related to the profession you have chose. You need to come up with at least 5 ideas. You can also list people you could talk who are already doing your job. They may have some ideas about what else to research.

RESEARCH-You need to find specifics about your job. The goal is to have at least 4 science-related facts explained in detail as well as connect them to the job you have chosen. (e.g., why this works/how this works/what are the processes used) You will need information about your science facts as well as on your job.

You must have three sources minimum.  One has to be a hard source (journal, book, etc)

Wikipedia may be used, but NOT LISTED as 1 of  YOUR sources

GREAT IDEA: Use the table of contents in your book to look at the physics topics…will cover topics we have not.

There are several books put aside for you to use for this project.  They are located in the Reference section of the Library above the World Book Encyclopedias.  We have several copies of How Things Work as well as 5 copies of a book, All in a Day's Work, which lists careers that use science.

The following careers are listed:

Science teacher -- Deep cave explorer -- Firefighter and paramedic -- Astronaut --  Environmental issues -- Environmental consultant -- Oceanographer -- Volcanologist -- Hurricane researcher -- Sport biomechanist -- Forensics services technician -- Bomb investigator -- Technology and toys -- Video game level designer -- Automotive technician -- Roller coaster designer -- Artificial intelligence expert.

For websites, try the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is great for facts about any career.

Try this database if your career choice is science-related.

You will need to :

           Create 5 Cards

~ Size of Playing Cards (NEATNESS COUNTS)

(bullets will be info about THE JOB/HOBBY)

(energy types used, friction, Newton’s laws, etc.)

Front : Picture

:Can draw or print (in color or light grayscale and color later)

--Use library bibliography resources sheet and/or easybib.com

DUE DATES: You will have three due dates.

Last: Cards plus bibliography: May 13, 2008.
